Keen climate change watchers will have seen the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (known as COP26) has been postponed until November 2021. COP26 had shaped up to be an opportunity to make further progress towards limiting global heating to the 1.5 degrees target.

The United Nations has already warned that we only have about ten years to prevent catastrophic climate change and ecological breakdown. Therefore, the decision to delay the conference by yet another year cannot have been taken lightly.

This pandemic has forced us indoors. Liberal Democrats can’t campaign as normal at the moment, yet we need not be downhearted. This is an opportunity to learn and reflect on how liberals of all stripes can influence the government’s climate change policy at every level.

What does green liberalism look like? How can we achieve positive environmental change locally? How can we campaign for a green recovery?

The Green Liberal Democrats are the environmental conscience of the Liberal Democrats. We promote the protection of the environment both in and beyond our party. This year we cannot run our conference as normal.

But, thanks to the miracle of technology, our conference is going ahead with a two-week festival of green events. We’re calling this year’s conference: “2020 Vision: Intensive Care for Our Planet – a sustainable recovery that works for everyone”.

Our programme is packed with exciting events and features keynote speakers and fascinating topics. We’ll kick off with the former leader of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron MP, who will outline his vision for the “new normal”.

Have you wondered how we are going to pay for the “Green Recovery”? We’ll be hosting the CND General Secretary Kate Hudson and Baroness Sue Miller to talk about whether banning nuclear weapons is the answer.

Who doesn’t love a leadership contest? The three contenders will be answering your questions at our Q and A session and holding their own events as well.

And that’s just the first day of our conference!
